Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party, the mediator, helps both parties explore options for resolving their dispute. A mediator does not represent either party and does not advocate for either party. The mediator helps parties create their own agreements based on their unique family needs. Mediation is a cost-effective and private way to settle all family law issues which cannot be resolved without outside assistance.
Parties may attend mediation with or without an attorney. Mediation can even take place before anyone has filed any documents with the court. Mediation offers a quick, private, and cost effective resolution to any dispute. The earlier people attend mediation and get a settlement finalized, the faster people can move on with their lives. Mediation can preserve fragile relationships where litigation is more likely to leave lasting damage to relationships, i.e, parents, employer/employee, contractor/homeowner or friends/neighbors.
Not all mediators are created equal. In Colorado you do NOT have to be an attorney to be a mediator. You do not have to have any specific training in mediation or in resolving disputes. Christine Callahan is a mediator with over ten years of experience as a mediator, has taught other neutrals about best practices for mediation, and has logged over 150 hours in classes advancing her skills as a mediator.
At Summit Law & Mediation, we strive to make the mediation process more effective by focusing on making progress toward resolution, rather than dwelling on the past. The past can be an indicator of how parties have worked or communicated historically, but focusing on the future often leads to a faster, less expensive, and more effective mediation process for everyone. We encourage parties to take an active role in creating their own best settlements.
Christine’s background in Adult Education, combined with her knowledge of the law, gives her the perfect balance of experience for guiding parties through effective and efficient mediation.
